Gavin Maclure's Musings

My take on politics locally, nationally and internationally

Margaret Thatcher superb to the last

It’s November 22nd 1990 and the Iron Lady has just been forced to resign by the Tory Toffs who decided to take “their” Party back. She then dutifully attends the House of Commons to respond to a vote of no confidence motion by the Labour Party, surrounded by the men in grey suits who betrayed her.

And this is her response: a tour de force of political debating in the Mother of all Parliaments.

Listen out to former Conservative MP Michael Carttiss who shouts “You can wipe the floor with these people!”

For 23 years there has not been a leader like her and there is unlikely to be for a long time to come.

  1. The Iron Lady’s story is so like a Greek tragedy, same characters on stage all maneuvering to topple her into her grave, politically, publicly and yet personally she was a mother, wife, daughter and once an innocent child. Oh what places the many out of control ‘selves’ will take us when they too are maneuvering for survival in whatever position we are in between our first and last breath………
