BREAKING: Huhne Guilty

Chris Huhne MP (not for much longer)

Former Cabinet minister Chris Huhne has pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice on day one of his trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.

Before today he had vigorously denied the allegation that he got his former wife to say she was driving when he was caught speeding on the M11. In other words Mr Huhne was lying to his back teeth.

No doubt today’s plea was Chris Huhne’s attempt to escape a period in clink although the judge seems to be revving up to send him down.

Tricky by-election coming up for Dave and Nick…

  1. Whilst remembering that much of this remains sub-judice because of the ongoing trial of his co-defendant, an initial look at the sentencing guidelines underlines how seriously this charge will be taken by the courts. The sentencing range runs from 4 months to 36 months. I doubt he will get 36 months, since he will get an initial discount for a guilty plea anyway, and this isn’t quite the same as some of the more serious charges under the same aspect of common law.

The Archer case, which is a precedent on sentencing, had sentences ranging from 12 months to 48 months, but if I would expect Mr Huhne to be sentenced to between 8 months and 12 months, possibly slightly longer – and he’ll serve half this time in jail, the rest on licence.

He gets a pension as an MP, and probably a resettlement payment. There should be a mechanism for those MPs who are forced to resign because of a criminal conviction to forfeit those resettlement payments, and potentially the pension as well. It is disgusting that this guy is still getting oodles of taxpayers money. Other politicians don’t see themselves bunged thousands when they are forced to step down…
