Poppy field: The Flower of Remembrance

Today is Remembrance Sunday and also Armistice Day, with 11th November falling on a Sunday this year.

I, along with millions of others in this country and throughout the world, stood in silence for two minutes at 11 O’Clock this morning to remember those who went to the battlefields of Europe in the First and Second World Wars to fight against tyranny, and those who went to fight for our country in the many wars since, including today in Afghanistan, and who never returned. We remember all those who have fallen and their families who have been left behind.

We owe so much to those past generations and present generations who paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can live in freedom today.

Today we recall the famous ode, ‘For the Fallen’, by Laurence Binyon, of which the fourth stanza reads:

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”

Lest We Forget.
